Cordaid in Central African Republic

Cordaid has assisted the people of the Central African Republic (CAR) since 2008. We operate 9 sub-offices in 7 provinces, with 200 staff members (15 international staff). We work in 4 thematic areas, supported by lobby and advocacy activities: health care, security and justice, humanitarian aid coupled with education in emergencies, and resilience/food security and livelihoods.

Where does Cordaid work?

In CAR, Cordaid works in seven prefectures. In Nana Mambere, Ouham Pende and Ouham in the northwest, Cordaid focuses on improving basic health services and providing humanitarian aid including WASH, shelter, food security, and protection to displaced people as well as host communities. In addition, we build and support schools and safe spaces for children to learn and play.

In the southern prefectures of Mambere Kadei, Lobaye and Ombella Mpoko, we provide primary health care support, advocacy and social cohesion programming - including peace building. We also support sexual and reproductive health care for youth and vulnerable populations. Cordaid also implements food security activities to improve the livestock value chain, in partnership with the ministry and local partners.

In the Basse Kotto prefecture, we support quality health services, build and restore clean water sources and promote good hygiene practices for host communities and displaced people.

We also implement health activities in the province of Mbomou.

Current situation

The Central African Republic, a landlocked country, has struggled with violence and political instability for decades. Nowadays, CAR is home to many armed factions and a multitude of local militia groups. These armed groups are responsible for widespread atrocities committed against civilians. The resurgence and persistence of violence in CAR since the beginning of 2017 and the dramatic rise in needs, have further undermined the populations’ resilience and coping mechanisms.

More than 2,5 million Central Africans, over half of the population, are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. There are 614,379 IDPs of which 50% are children. Recurring violence and ineffective government has resulted in a lack of access to basic services and education. Health services are sparse and there is a shortage of skilled medical personnel. People do not have the economic opportunities to provide for themselves, let alone their families.

Poor infrastructure and attacks on aid workers, including kidnappings, further exacerbates the dire humanitarian situation. Women and girls face gender-based violence and discrimination at family, community and society level. Their access to health care, education, security & justice and politics is constrained by social, traditional, cultural and other barriers.

Cordaid in Central African Republic

Health care

Cordaid strengthens the health system by mainly using a results-based financing approach. We are improving the quantity and quality of health services provided to 1,638,000 Central Africans (1,227,366 consultations and 61,917 assisted births in 2017). Since 2015, Cordaid, with the support of partners has spent 41,5 million euros in health programming in CAR.

Security & Justice

Together with our local partners, we help create an enabling environment where victims of violence feel empowered to rebuild their lives, restore their sense of dignity, and fully participate in their communities. Our Strategic Partnership program continues to provide an enabling platform for local organizations, and has been key in capacity building initiatives relating to organizational strengthening.

Humanitarian aid

We provide WASH, shelter, food security and protection interventions to host communities and displaced people. We build and support schools and safe spaces for children to learn and play. Over 285,000 conflict-affected people have benefited from Cordaid’s humanitarian aid interventions in CAR.

The Central African Republic’s ongoing conflict has claimed thousands of lives and has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. Cordaid supports the ailing population by providing access to basic services such as water, food, health care and education. Image: Elorry Mahou.

Resilience / Food security

We improve food security and create economic opportunities to displaced people and vulnerable groups, such as women and young adults.

Lobby & Advocacy

Lobby & Advocacy mainstreaming activities focus on health systems strengthening, access to justice, protection and gender inclusion.

Through its interventions, Cordaid supports the government’s efforts to sustainably develop the country and to improve the well-being of the Central African population.

This brochure gives an overview of Cordaid’s activities in the Central African Republic in French.
